History

IMU Buddhist Society was founded in October 1998 by Tan Soon Kim(M1/97) and Chong Euming(M1/97) during the International Medical College (IMC) era.

This society, formerly known as Dharma Society, was formed with a vision to share the knowledge of Dharma among students and faculty members and also to practice the Dharma together. It is the vision of the founders that we have been trying to achieve for more than 10 years, for it is not an easy task to open one's heart, dispel it of ignorance and cultivate it with wisdom and compassion. In addition, the society also hopes to provide an opportunity and place for students to discuss and share their views regarding Dharma philosophies and their application to daily life.

On 8th September 1999, Prof. Hla Yee Yee became our first official advisor of the Dharma Society. She was later joined by Dr. Ranjit De Alwis. Together they have been guiding the Buddhist Society through thick and thin to achieve what we are today. With prior experience as student advisor in Universiti Sains Malaysia and a long-practising Buddhist, Prof. Hla's participation has guided the once relatively new society into a well established society we know now.

Throughout the years, the society has been actively organizing activities such as Dharma talks, Dharma sharing sessions, meditation retreats, forums, educational trips and blood and organ donation drives. These activities have triggered the curiosity in members to find out more about the Dharma and also instill Buddhistic principles in their daily lifes. The society often invite guest speakers from around Klang Valley to educate members in the Dharma and to guide members to walk the path leading to eternal happiness, Nirvana.
